The “Sport and Culture” Research Group was established in 1998 and is based on the teaching and research work conducted by faculty members of the Postgraduate Program in Communication (PPGCom/UERJ) and the undergraduate courses at the Faculty of Social Communication of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). It is registered with the CNPq and the UERJ’s Sub-Rectorate of Postgraduate Studies and Research, under the coordination of Professor Ronaldo Helal.
The main objective is to disseminate academic knowledge to the general public, strengthen the research group, and establish connections with professors and researchers from other higher education institutions in Brazil and abroad. The meetings involve reading and discussing texts in the field of social studies of sport.
One of the activities of the Research Group is the LEME Meetings, which were held in person until March 2020. These meetings were recorded, edited, and made available to the general public on the LEME YouTube channel. From April that year, due to the pandemic, the group adopted a remote format to continue its activities. With an audience larger than the in-person meetings, live streaming of events continued remotely, enabling participation from researchers in other states who would normally not have synchronous access to LEME activities.
